The New Academic Street project has been run for three years with a purpose of bringing better services to RMIT students by upgrading facilities in the city campus. Therefore, students’ expectation about university life has tendency to increase sharply. They believe that university's campus is a place for them to not only study but also have fun and enjoy modern utilities.

Core facts:

  • The city campus of RMIT university includes 154 separate buildings. Even though those buildings are attractive, modern and innovative, it does not bring a feeling of being an integrated campus to their students.

  • The campus lacks food retails, spaces for studying and relaxing, green environment and convenient pathways between buildings.

  • The New Academic Street project has been run for three years to change the campus's appearance following students’ demands. The project has redesigned the library and laneways to expand more space for students to comfortably study. New balconies and gardens have also been decorated to help students relax in fresh atmosphere after stressful classes. Besides, they have added more TV studios, retails, entries, rooftop terraces and a Student Hall inside and across those buildings to meet their entertainment needs.

After three years running, the New Academic Street has already pleased students' expectation. Step by step, they are changing the traditional campus into an integrated one. RMIT students are now feeling free to enjoy their convenient studying environment. The New Academic Street team hopes that new utilities will enhance students' experience in an unique way, which is considered as an exclusive right of being a member of this university.

Rachel Dinh, the sixth-semester student with major in Professional Communication said

“Students now can easily access to classes by new pathways between buildings. Moreover, we have more spaces to study and relax during break time and after school. We also can buy breakfast and lunch inside the campus instead of wasting much time on food courts of shopping centres. I feel glad that the campus is transforming in a positive way.”

Miss Linda Stevenson, a senior manager, shared her opinion

“Students tell us they love being part of the city but it’s hard to find space to relax and enjoy campus life. Students want more places to collaborate and study. They also want the fundamentals – such as enrolment and program queries – to be managed easily and efficiently.”
